We all love waking up in the morning and starting our day by making a fresh smoothie at home! The freedom to play around with the recipe is endless and never fails to kick start our day with something filling as well as healthy. This has undoubtedly been one busy little summer for us here at the Gardening by Design team – so from time-to-time we find ourselves skipping this morning ritual that we find ourselves sticking to so religiously in the winter months. Thankfully, however, Ottawa has a lovely handful of healthy on the go alternatives to our at home concoctions. And it’s fun to treat yourself out every now and then! Our personal favorite this summer has been Simply Raw Express tucked into one of our favorite up-and-coming nooks of the city: Hintonburg!
Erins Pick // the ‘Peaceful Warrior’ smoothie
Packed with fresh bananas, leafy green kale, protein, hemp, and flax! I feel like I can kick the day’s butt after this energizing smoothie.
Engelina’s Pick // the ‘Strawberry Field’s’ smoothie
Full of juicy red strawberries (but of course), hemp seed, coconut oil a staple obsession here for all of us at GBD, local maple syrup, and vanilla bean. A sweet feeling yet healthy treat to begin my day with.
Mary-Anne’s Pick // ‘Glow’ cold pressed juice
I tend to opt for a freshly pressed juice more often than a smoothie: the ‘Glow’ and ‘Alkalize’ blends are my personal favs. They are just filled with a TON of greens like lettuce, kale, and herbs, as well as citrus fruits to balance it out. Can’t go wrong!
You can find Simply Raw at 989 Wellington Street West – and while you’re there don’t forget to take a peek at all of the awesome vegan snack options they carry as well! They give out loyalty cards too so don’t forget to get your stamp every time you try something, as eventually you receive $10 off your 10th purchase! Fun! We love checking out local smoothie spots for inspiration to incorporate into our at home recipes too – we always find something new we hadn’t even thought of previously and it helps us switch things up and keep it fresh. What are some of your favorites – to make at home and to grab when you’re out and about on the town? Let us know! Recipe saved from
